Changelog

0.2.0

Rawbit and collaboration are here

The full version is out on itch.io! Collab is rebuilt from scratch: invite who you want and draw together at the same time, without stepping on each other’s work. Plus some major improvements for smoother and lighter tiles, files and timelapses.

New

  • Buy Rawbit on itch.io and paste the download key from your purchase to unlock saving and exporting in the demo, from Preferences > License. No reinstall needed. A key works on up to 2 of your computers, and keeps working offline.
  • Private collab sessions: you can let people in or refuse peers, remove them at any time, and choose who can edit or save a copy. See everyone's cursors, selections and ping live.
  • Flip and rotate tiles and objects as you place them, from the place toolbar. These rotations are non-destructive, so each instance keeps its own orientation.
  • Notification sounds for things that need your attention, like collab requests, updates and errors. (You can turn these off in Preferences).
  • Rename and duplicate sprites from the Assets panel, and see how many times each one is used and which ones are unused.
  • A Help menu to activate your license, check for updates and see the app version.

Improved

  • Finding and joining a collab session is quicker and more reliable.
  • Drawing together is safer, undo and redo only take back your own pixels, and a fill, paste, transform or filter only touches the pixels it changes, never someone else's strokes in the same area.
  • Layers, frames, tiles and placed objects sync change by change, so two people editing different things no longer overwrite each other, and strokes made while someone joins are no longer lost.
  • While someone changes the canvas size, everyone else's editing pauses, so no strokes get lost to the resize.
  • Other people's cursors move smoothly with interpolation.
  • Joining from mobile data or a strict network now connects through a relay when a direct connection isn't possible.
  • Joining a collab session opens the host's document in its own tab, and your open documents stay as they are. Tabs show which document you're sharing or have joined.
  • Files are smaller and save faster, especially ones with a long timelapse, which can shrink to about half. Older files open as usual and convert the first time you save them.
  • Files with a long timelapse open instantly and use far less memory: the timelapse only loads when you open the viewer.
  • Crash recovery saves only what changed, so it keeps your unsaved work at most about 20 seconds behind instead of two minutes.
  • Timelapses stay light on big canvases and long sessions and playback with undos is up to 20x faster.
  • Preferences are grouped more clearly, and keyboard shortcuts can be searched by key as well as by action.
  • Refreshed menu and status bar pixel art icons.

Fixed

  • Moving a selection on a pixel layer after painting in a sprite or tileset no longer drops its pixels.
  • Deleting a sprite, or undoing its creation, no longer leaves the tab marked unsaved after saving.
  • Shrinking a selection and enlarging it again keeps its original detail.
  • Canvas and sprite size dialogs warn when a size is over the limit instead of silently cropping.
  • The first save after opening a file with a long timelapse no longer freezes the app for several seconds.
  • Tooltips and menus show above open dialogs.
  • The Subtract and Divide blend modes now show on the canvas, in exports and when merging layers, instead of looking like Normal.
  • Double-clicking a .rbit file opens it in Rawbit, also when Rawbit is already running.
  • Rotating or flipping the canvas now works with tiles and placed objects, turning them along with your art.

Removed

  • The demo no longer recovers unsaved work after a crash; crash recovery is part of the full version.

0.1.2

Lighter files and undo

Smaller files, a lighter undo history and faster tools, plus a round of fixes.

Improved

  • Files with reference images are up to 85% smaller, and pixel art stays pixel-exact. Older files shrink the next time you save them.
  • Undo uses much less memory, so long sessions stay light.
  • Flip, rotate, extract and bucket fill are faster.
  • Pasting into a selected sprite zooms to it.

Fixed

  • Importing many references at once no longer freezes the app.
  • Closing a document frees the memory its reference images used.
  • Large pixel-art references stay crisp when scaled down.
  • Ctrl+V now works normally in every text field and dialog.

0.1.1

View rotation and tile offsets

Public builds are now the free early-access demo: every tool works, while saving, exporting and timelapse export unlock in the paid version.

New

  • View rotation: turn the canvas without changing your art.
  • Tile layer offset: shift a tile layer's grid by a few pixels, so its tiles line up with art or layers that don't sit on the same canvas grid.

Fixed

  • The symmetry axis snaps to half pixels, and its handles stay in view.
  • Zoom gestures and zoom-to-fit respect the current view.
  • Resizing works in submode and on floating selections.
  • Screen layers and tilesets are no longer capped at a maximum size.
